Carlsbad, December 16, 2022 - Looking for affordable stocking stuffers or gifts? The Explorer division of Beacons, Inc. will host a "Maker's Market" and coffee cart next Friday, December 16, 2022 from 10 am to noon at 6150 Yarrow Drive, Suite E, Carlsbad, CA. The Beacons trainees typically host events on Fridays to showcase their skills and wares, and to provide a wonderful opportunity for families to visit to learn more about what Beacons offers and meet the trainees themselves.
Explorer offers two years of vocational training paced for those with moderate disabilities who are interested in exploring and developing work skills for community or self-employment. Explorer launched in April 2022 and approximately 41% of its trainees have found employment in the community. Headed by Bethany Britt, M.A., a former special education teacher from San Dieguito Union High School District (SDUHSD), Explorer offers trainees an opportunity to learn skills in graphic design, entrepreneurial skills, soft skills for the workplace, and much more! Trainees develop connections with community employers through daily excursions to local businesses and settings and volunteering. For eligible San Diego Regional Center consumers, workshops are provided at no cost to the consumer or trainee.
Beacons also offers the PathFinder vocational training option for individuals who would benefit from shorter 4-month vocational training workshops. Pathfinder's last two sessions resulted in 100% employment of the trainees who wanted to transition to community employment.
The goal of both divisions is to provide low ratio postsecondary learning opportunities - not currently available at local educational institutions - so that those with diversabilities can continue their learning once they leave their high school districts. Trainees pick and choose which subjects they want to learn and apply for a place in the Spring and Fall Sessions. The Beacons Explorer division is currently full for spring, but PathFinder has some spots still available. Interested parties should apply to get on a waitlist or to begin the enrollment process.
