Summer is a great time for trying and learning new things!
So many of our young adults complete vocational assessments and plans outlining "their" future dreams, but too often their responses are based upon information unnecessarily limited due to their lack of exposure to vocational and community activities. Demands of therapy and educational schedules can often result in individuals missing out on other learning opportunities that can help enrich their lives forever. As parents ourselves, we "get it" and want to change that!
Our summer exploration "mini-workshops" offer individuals with developmental disabilities an opportunity to pick subjects they want to learn more about. Lesson driven instruction is provided in a relaxed, but supervised small group setting using hands-on activities designed by community individuals with an expertise in the subject matter. Each individual workshop is 8 hours. (Learn a little, laugh a lot!)
How are subjects selected? Workshop subjects are determined by the input and interests of those who we serve. Our 2019 workshops (July 8 - August 1) included 1st Responder Training, 3D Art, Dance, DJ & Podcasting, Painting, Photography, Science Exploration & Experiments and Self Defense.
If your loved one has an interest in learning about something in particular, let us know and maybe it'll be a workshop for next summer! Let us do the work! Person driven planning leads to person driven choices! Help us provide those choices!
NEWS! As of August 2019, SDRC clients eligible for SDRC funding for postsecondary options may attend up to 2 summer workshops per summer if included in the consumer's IPP. Please contact your service coordinator to request an IPP addendum if eligible. Beacons Vendor #PY1700.
