Summer is coming! Starting June 29 and going through August 6, Beacons will offer six weeks of fun to help individuals aged 16+ learn something new this summer!

Onsite or Virtual? 
Due to COVID-19, workshops at this time are expected to be provided virtually. Participants in workshops that use materials will be provided "kits" for individuals to pick up to use at home. Ratios are no more than 10:3, although most may be smaller depending on the workshop.

Costs: 
1. SDRC Consumers: SDRC consumers should contact their service coordinators to determine if they are eligible for SDRC funding, and if so, discuss:

• whether an IPP addendum is needed;
• how many workshops can be funded; and 

• when a "purchase of service" can be completed.

2. Private Pay: For individuals who are paying privately, our Board fundraises throughout the year to help subsidize workshops to keep them at a low cost for those not eligible for SDRC funding. Workshops for 2020 will be $120 per workshop (or $15 per hour for supervised fun). 

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS

 

ASL (American Sign Language)

This interactive workshop will introduce basic signs and cool signals that only those who know ASL will know! Learning a new language that you can speak with your hands has never been more fun! This is a great workshop for those who need a refresher, or who want to learn a language that doesn't require reading or talking (just signing!) to communicate.

 

Week 1 (6/29 - 7/2) 
10 am to Noon

BASIC FIRST AID & SAFETY

Learn basic first aid and interesting facts about some of the creatures and plants around you! Do you know what to do if you're bitten by a snake or how to avoid plants that can hurt youJoin us to learn basic first aid and safety measures that could help you or someone else! This workshop may ignite an interest in volunteer and other opportunities in medical and health-related work opportunities.

 

Week 5 (July 27 - 30)

CRAFTS!

Enjoy making things with your hands? Craft classes this summer will help participants make practical and beautiful items for your room, for sale or for others! Each craft workshop session will offer something new daily to keep it fun ,and will explore community opportunities to sell finished works.

Week 2: July 6 -10 am - 12 noon (Level 1: For those with fine motor issues)

Week 4: July 20 - 23: 12:30 - 2:30 pm (Level 2: For those without fine motor issues)

NOTE: Kits with materials will be available for pick up the week before.  

DANCE & MOVEMENT

A veteran dance instructor will share some easy-to-follow, fun-to-learn dance moves to help you groove to the music! Whether you want to stand out on the dance floor, or just get some exercise, join instructor Klier for some fun and learn about community options for the rest of the year! (8 hours total)

DO IT YOURSELF (DIY) BACKYARD GAMES

Looking to make the most of summer outdoor fun? Then you need some DIY backyard games that are larger than life! In this workshop you will make your own outdoor games, which may include bowling, sticky tic tac toe, giant checkers or yard Yahtzee, ring toss, make an obstacle course out of pool noodles, bean bag toss or cornhole toss - fun games to make and decorate yourself - then have the summer to enjoy! 

 

Week 4 (June 20 - 23)
10 am - 12 Noon

Note: Kit will be included with materials for families to pick up the week before the workshop.

FOOD HANDLER'S LICENSE

Want to work in a restaurant or cafeteria? Or do you just like working with food? Join this workshop to work towards getting your food handling license. Learn about basic practices preparing food, staying safe and more! If you complete this workshop's activities, you might just leave with a San Diego County food handler's license to help you get a job! (Note: This is a licensing prep class and participant does not guarantee that participants will pass the San Diego County licensing program).

GRAPHIC DESIGN (Intro) (Program: Affinity Designer)

Are you a creative person who likes technology? Learn how to use the graphic art program called Affinity Designer, an affordable alternative to Adobe Illustrator. Unleash your creativity and learn about some ways to make money using your talents!  
IMPORTANT: To participate in this class, you will need to first download Affinity Designer on your personal laptop or other device. Affinity Designer is NOT included in the workshop fee, but is currrently on sale for $24.99: Link

 

Week 5 (July 27 - 30)

PHONE PHOTOGRAPHY 

Phones can take high quality professional looking photographs if you know some of the key tricks! If you love taking photos and are ready to take your photos to the next level, join this workshop to learn how to remove backgrounds, stylize your photos, use "obstructive" tools to create unique looks, make cards and more! (8 hours total per workshop)

PAINTING 

Learn to use a variety of tools and different paint styles to create finished works you can be proud of! Each artist will get a kit with canvas and paints to create at least 4 separate products per workshop, and learn some ways to possibly sell works of art. (8 hours each workshop).

SOCIAL MEDIA, TECH TOOLS & SAFETY

Learn fun uses for social media, explore new apps and programs, and tips on how to avoid unsafe practices and traps.

SOFT SKILLS for THE WORKPLACE


Practice role playing, identify the do's and don'ts of workplace communication, and other skills you need to build connections at work!

WEB DESIGN (Introductory)


Interested in learning about website design? This class will explore the use of templates, animation, use of "strips" and "boxes", and numerous other features to learn basic design concepts without the use of coding.
